The latest delusion being trumpeted by the "Business as Usual Crowd" is that we overshoot the non-scientific targets of the Paris accord and somehow, miraculously, remove CO2 from the atmosphere, with fantasy technology, that currently doesn't exist at scale.

William Nordhaus was the person who set the 2C Rubicon of warming.

Nordhaus's qualifications, to set this heavily science-based decision, is in economics, yes, you read that right, an economist was left to make a scientific decision, he was spectacularly unqualified to make.

Nordhaus will go down in history, whatever that is anymore, as being the single most influential individual in plotting our trajectory into the abyss.

He won a Nobel Prize for his efforts!

The IPCC gambled the biosphere on fantasy technology and lost.

To keep the irony going much of the CO2 capture by Industry is being reinjected into oil wells to you guessed it, remove additional oil and gas.

I've tried to summarize the Nordhaus folly below:

Do I detect a bit of cynicism, Kevin? George Carlin’s line about uncovering a disappointed idealist comes to mind.

Leaving decisions to those in the dismal science is hardly the only part we got wrong. Fantasy technology is what we invoke repeatedly!

Thank you for your informed comment, and for sharing my work and adding to it. I very much appreciate your ongoing collegiality.

I could not navigate the link for Nature Bats Last you, Guy, sent me, but it seems to leave out the enormous amount of global heat energy being absorbed by the 1.2 trillion tons of melting global ice annually, 3.3 billion tons per day, where each pound absorbs 144 BTUs. So, this heat just seems to disappear, but can be seen in the secondary effects. One author predicted some years ago that the current surface temps would be 65 degF hotter, were it not for the hydrological systems' cooling, including the melting global ice and oceans' absorption, yet still inadequate to absorb the heat energy equivalent of 20+ Hiroshima nuclear bomb blasts PER SECOND, where each releases 63 trillion BTUs. As Jeff Goodell says in his book by the same name: "The Heat Will Kill You First". Have a blessed day and beware the coming Summer.

I was struck by this sentence "....but their carbon footprints have grown in recent years as they expand data centers for AI." I am older and don't want to fall back into "the good old days" thinking but AI is at minimum very concerning to me for many reasons, including the fact it takes so much energy to produce something that tricks us into thinking it's real! Happy you are out there, Guy. Thanks for the article. You've been right all along.

“AI is at a minimum very concerning...” I couldn't agree more, Mez. If you're older, then I'm VERY older. I'm no fan of AI for many reasons.

The only media outlet that I trust is C3S (EU), and their "Climate Pulse" page updated daily. With a 2 day publication delay, their chart reveals a 0.58 degC global surface temp increase over the 1991-2020 baseline for today and a 0.45 degC sea temp increase over that same baseline. So, these temp increases are since 2020, or over 4yrs., so 0.145 degC increase for surface temps and 0.113 degC for sea temp increase annually since 2020. These temps were much higher in the hotter months here in the Northern Hemisphere, averaging 0.214 degC annually over the past 3.5yrs. above the 1991-2020 baseline for surface temp increases.

In any case, we are burning the hell up and no MSM outlet, controlled as they are by our corporate overlords, will alert the general public to this ongoing existential threat to ALL life on the planet. At this rate, we may see 2 degC surface temps for the global ave. by 2027, with Europe already at 2.3 degC., and the insufferable 3 degC global surface temp by 2032, 7 yrs. hence, which extrapolates to 6 degC global surface temp increase by 2047, when any child unfortunate to be born today turns 23yo. Thank you, Guy, for your courageous efforts to warn the fossil fuel consuming 8.2B (200,000 more each day) of our purposely ignorant fellows of the impending doom. You are not alone and neither am I! Have a blessed day. Gregg

According to governments of the world, 1.5 C is behind us. 2 C is also behind us. https://guymcpherson.com/science-update-earths-energy-imbalance/

C3S indicates that we are at 1.64 degC global ave. surface temp now, so 0.214 X 2 + 1.64 = 2.068, or we surpass 2.0 degC 2 yrs. from now, about Nov. 2026. I think we're on a nearly identical path. I hope you agree this dialog and getting this data out is critical, especially for the unborn, who will, on this trajectory, celebrate their 23rd BD in 2047, when the global ave. surface temp hits 6 degC over the 1900-1950 baseline.

The worst of the worst polluters can only do what they do because of our support. Humans are egregious consumers on a scale never seen before. This is the only example I can think of where all of humanity is together on the same path.

Finally, we are all together. Oh, wait: that's not a good idea in this case.
